First African American Pullitzer Prize Winner
Gwendolyn Elizabeth Brooks was an American poet, author, and teacher who was the first African American to receive the Pulitzer. She won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1950 for Annie Allen, a book of poetry about an African American girl growing into womanhood.
